Let’s make a difference, together!

It’s no longer enough for skin care companies to make a product that’s works (or worse, doesn’t) when the cost is our long-term health, and the health of our planet. That’s the old way of doing business, and it’s careless.
We’re building Jivi to do more…to be more than what has come before.

Be more…impactful.

Companies have the opportunity to make the world better. And not just by treating their employees well and recycling (although we think both of those are awesome). For-profit companies should seek out ways, beyond normal operations, to use their resources to make a difference.

Here’s what we’re doing to be more impactful.

Buy a bottle, give a meal

Jivi started as a way to solve a health problem. According to Feeding America, 41 million people face hunger in the U.S. today (including nearly 13 million children and over 5 million seniors). That’s a health care problem we think is as important to tackle as what we put on our skin! So we’re working with you to make a difference. For every bottle you buy, we donate a meal to the closest food bank to you. Learn more

Be more…natural.

The term “natural” gets used a lot in skin care…usually to highlight a few key ingredients, and to distract from the rest of the chemicals being used. It makes it difficult to tell whether the products you’re using are actually natural or just pretending. We’re starting with 100% natural ingredients and working to get better from there.

Here are a few things we’re doing to be more than natural.

They’re edible

Yep, you read that right. The skin is the largest organ of our bodies, and a lot of what we put on it gets absorbed into our bloodstream. So we decided that if we can’t eat it, we shouldn’t feed it to our skin. That means no petrochemicals, no parabens, and nothing synthetic. We realize that we can’t say this about a lot of food out there…but that’s a problem for another day.

Based in aloe, not water

Our ingredients are chosen with care, and we want your body to fully absorb them. That’s why aloe is our first ingredient, instead of water like most companies (check your bottles to see). Water evaporates as it spreads across the skin, stranding many active ingredients at the surface. Aloe vera puts the other ingredients on its back, carrying all the good stuff to the deepest layers of your skin, while providing moisture. It’s quite the overachiever.

Small batch = Fresh

All our products are made in small batches in our facility in NC. They get some vitamin E and rosemary, instead of synthetic preservatives, and go in airless bottles to keep their ingredients fresh. Then they’re sent to you. It’s simple. Our bottles have a much shorter journey to you than the ones made in China…which sit in a shipping container then a warehouse for months before getting to a store shelf. It’s a much more natural journey, too!

Be more…local.

We love buying local! It lets you meet the person you’re buying from, creates a sense of community, and helps reduce emissions from overseas shipping. Sadly, we can’t manufacture our products in everyone’s backyard. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to give up.

Here are a few things we’re doing to be more local.

Sourced in the U.S.A.

Our ingredients are key to what we make, and we strive to source the best. Sometimes that means going far to get a particular plant or oil from its natural habitat. But, when possible, we try to find our ingredients in the US. It’s nice to support local farmers. It’s also nice to the environment. All of our products are over 50% locally grown, and most are over 70%. (We tell you where our ingredients come from on each product page – check them out!)

We are the manufacturers

We develop and manufacture all our products here, in the US. From an initial idea, to mixing bowl experiments, to small batch manufacturing, everything is done in North Carolina, and shipped directly to you. We have full control over quality. No corporate parent dictating product design to improve profitability. And no contracting out to someone overseas.

Impact your community

You don’t have to buy (farmer’s market) local to impact local! We work with food banks around the country to make sure that, for every bottle we ship to you, a meal is donated close to your home. That way, you can get a product you love and help create a better community around you. Learn more

Be more…transparent.

There are many choices that go into making a skin care product: What ingredients do we use? How and where do we manufacture? What happens to our products when they’re finished? We want you to know the decisions we’ve made, and why we’ve made them, so you can hold us accountable.

Here are a few things we’re doing to be more transparent.

Ingredients

Our ingredients are the stars of our products. They’re what make them effective and safe. And they’re what you’re putting on your body every day. So we make sure you know exactly what goes into everything we make! We also tell you what percentage of the product is natural (spoiler: it’s always 100%), what percentage is organic, and from where we source them. For example, check out our moisturizer.

Be more…sustainable.

Skin care makes us more beautiful. But, we don’t want to look good today at the cost of healthy skin in the future (it’s one reason natural ingredients are better than harsh chemicals). We think the environment deserves the same logic: we can make and ship great products today, without harming the planet’s future.

Here are a few things we’re doing to be more sustainable.

Everything is recyclable

Recycling conserves resources, prevents pollution, supports public health, and saves water and energy. That’s a whole lot of impact for a relatively simple action. So we decided to make all of our packaging recyclable: from the bottles and tins (which are re-usable) to the box or bag they come in, everything can get tossed in the green bin. In this instance, we think the tail end (of a product’s life) should wag the dog.

Organic

When you grow plants with pesticides and fertilizers, some of the chemicals end up in our land and waterways. That’s not a very responsible way to treat our planet. It’s why we try to find plants grown without chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. All of our products are at least 80% organic, and we’re working to make that higher.

Be more…responsible.

Companies have an obligation to make sure they don’t harm their customers or their workers in search of profit. In the skin care industry, this responsibility should extend to animals. We’ve made sure our products are safe for you, by avoiding chemicals and using 100% natural ingredients.

Here are some other things we’re doing to be more responsible.

We’re cruelty-free

Animal testing shouldn’t still exist in 2018. Unfortunately, it does. Cruelty Free International estimates that over 115 million animals are used in experiments globally each year! In skin care and cosmetics it’s completely unnecessary. There are thousands of ingredients to choose from that have been proven safe. Or you can do what we do, and stay away from chemicals entirely. That way you don’t have to test the safety of cost-saving experimental ingredients on animals.

Be more…fun.

Skin care should be fun (or at least we think so). We spend a lot of time at Jivi finding ways to amuse ourselves and (hopefully) you, from the little poems we write, to the Warhol-inspired soup cans on the cards letting you know where we donated your meal.

Here are a few other things we’re doing to be more fun.

Limited edition scents

Fresh grass and grapefruit and olives with blue cheese,

Old books and matchsticks and gingerbread cookies,

Lavender candles and warm caramels,

These are a few of my favorite smells!

Check out our latest limited edition scent!

Collaborations

We work a lot better, and have a lot more fun, when we’re throwing around ideas (and some bouncy balls), than when we work alone. So partnering with other interesting businesses and artists is really exciting for us! We’re always looking for our next collaboration, whether it’s for a limited run product or an unexplored opportunity to make a difference.

Be more…affordable.

We thought it was really expensive to make natural products, too. Then we made some. It turns out, you can make 100% natural skin care, and make an impact, while remaining affordable. You just have to try!

Here are a few things we’re doing to be more affordable.

From us directly to you

There is no reason the price tag on a skin care bottle should make you sweat (although sweating is good for your pores). By designing our products from the ground up, keeping all the manufacturing in house, and shipping directly to you, we can deliver high quality products, with amazing ingredients, to your doorstep at an affordable price. Save your sweat for trying to get tickets to see our founding fathers rap about the national debt.

Try for free

We keep all of our products under $20 so that you don’t have to choose between looking naturally beautiful and looking for a higher credit limit. But sometimes you just want to feel (and smell) the products before committing to the full thing. That’s why we have a way for you to try Jivi at home, for free! Get started
